The Story of Samento and the Birth of NutraMedix Often, a herbal supplement company has at its core a plant that is directly linked to its history and the mission of its founders. This plant is essential in helping the company evolve while supporting the health and well-being of its customers. In our case, this plant is known among local tribes as Samento (Uncaria tomentosa) and has been the cornerstone of our development story. Transformative Humanitarian Flights In the 1980s, Tim Eaton volunteered for humanitarian flights, providing aid in countries like Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and remote areas of Peru. He felt fortunate to be able to bring support to all these places. These humanitarian missions led Tim to participate in simulated survival training days in the Amazon rainforest. Armed with his wit, previous experience, and guidance from local tribe members, who taught him what he could and couldn't eat and drink. Water, of course, was crucial for survival, and he discovered vines that contained it, growing on the treetops with claw-shaped hooks, varying in diameter from 5 cm to 30 cm or more. "Cut the vine!" the natives told Tim. "It's a good source of water. You won't get sick." When he cut it, the water flowed into Tim's mouth, looking clear and tasting woody and bitter, as if it had passed through a bark filter. That was how Tim first tried cat's claw in his life. Little did he know how that moment would change his life. During those early years of the 1980s, Tim continued to embark on humanitarian aid trips while sharing knowledge with the local natives and drinking from the cat's claw vine. They taught him that cat's claw was used for many things and was an essential part of the Amazonian pharmacopeia. During his stays in Peru, Tim met and fell in love with his future wife, Bertha. In the early 1990s, the newlywed Eatons relocated to Florida, bringing with them the vision of their new company, NutraMedix. The goal was to offer Amazonian healing products in the United States and use the profits to fund projects that addressed the physical and spiritual needs of different indigenous communities. Our First Product, Uncaria Tomentosa (Cat's Claw) They started by introducing very small quantities in the United States. It was a completely new world in the field of natural supplements. By chance, they came across Phillip Steinberg in Wisconsin, who ground the bark to transform it into a powder that could be encapsulated. Phillip, a certified nutritionist, personally used it and was so impressed that he wrote numerous articles and a book about it: "Cat's Claw: Uncaria Tomentosa, the Miraculous Herb of the Peruvian Jungle." News about NutraMedix's Cat's Claw began to spread, and the company started offering it in other forms: as tea, in the form of bark pieces, and as a powdered extract. Its early success allowed them to expand and start developing other products. From 1995 to 1999, they released 1,000 tons of cat's claw to the market, selling directly to consumers and acting as a wholesale supplier to many of the world's largest supplement and herb brands. 50% of the profits were donated to their.

In the late 1990s, a wholesale customer made an interesting request to us. They had received a shipment of NutraMedix Cat's Claw, and shortly after receiving it, they wrote, "We want a lot more, but it has to be the same type." They were also looking to implement quality control tests to perform chemical analyses on each product shipment.

Coincidentally, at that time, the laboratory that NutraMedix used for the analyses called Tim. The laboratory director said, "I'm coming over. I have exciting news to share." Two hours later, he informed Tim that NutraMedix had found an extremely rare form of cat's claw that was naturally free of TOA (tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids).

Further research showed that the vast majority of cat's claw contained TOAs, which counteracted most of the immune-supporting factors present in the plant. In contrast, TOA-free cat's claw acted differently and was capable of supporting optimal immune health without overstimulation.

That's when NutraMedix realized how their cat's claw could provide the necessary funding for the many humanitarian projects they had in mind. To the disappointment of their wholesale customers, the decision was made to sell NutraMedix Cat's Claw exclusively to consumers and healthcare professionals.

Tim and his NutraMedix team spend the whole year traveling the world, visiting the projects they support and sourcing botanical ingredients. They often return to the Amazon rainforest, where Tim continues to fly his single-engine plane and land in small cleared areas to meet with his friends from the jungle. During these visits, he brings along botanists who understand the local ecology, doctors knowledgeable about native traditions, and, when necessary, guides who have established trusted relationships with the people and tribes of the region.

Throughout the years of studying and sourcing Samento (cat's claw), NutraMedix has come to appreciate its personality. One aspect is how it changes. A vine can be TOA-free one year and not the next. TOA content can vary from 1% to 20% or more. It can also become TOA-free after previously being identified as containing TOA. Studies have shown that even a small percentage of TOAs can affect cat's claw's support for a healthy immune system. Therefore, finding TOA-free vines is akin to a small miracle and is only possible with the help of knowledgeable natives from the Peruvian jungle.

The current Samento products, offered in NutraMedix liquid bottles, are not exactly the same as the previous capsules. While the ingredient is the same, the patented extraction process has resulted in a more potent herbal supplement, backed by research conducted at universities in several countries.

Incredible People

Among the incredible people who have joined the NutraMedix family is integrative physician William Lee Cowden, MD (H). Several years ago, Dr. Cowden learned about the amazing properties of Samento during a health conference. While impressed with Samento's special qualities, he also wanted to ensure that the company manufacturing and selling it was authentic and ethical in its mission, rather than just a marketing strategy.

Dr. Cowden requested a meeting with Tim Eaton and posed a series of questions to assess the authenticity and integrity of the company and its founders. After being satisfied with the answers, he expressed his desire to work with them and contribute to the company's mission. Thus began a professional and personal relationship that led to the development of the Cowden Support Program, a protocol that utilizes 14 NutraMedix products to address unresolved health challenges.

In 2018, the Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru, initiated research on NutraMedix products. The head of the research department, León Villegas Vílchez, who had been studying cat's claw for over two decades, was surprised to discover the existence of this rare type of cat's claw. He immediately contacted Tim Eaton to share his impressions.

León explained that over the years, he had worked with different varieties of cat's claw, but NutraMedix Samento was the only one that truly met the standards established by the United States Pharmacopeia. Utilizing state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, León's team determined that tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids were undetectable in NutraMedix products through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Impressed by the results, NutraMedix sent more products to León's laboratory, reaffirming his opinion of the company. León concluded by saying, "I had never seen before a product line from a company that truly fulfills everything it promises."

Synergies

In 2018, NutraMedix began focusing on Samento and its synergistic relationship with other plants. The art and science of herbal formulation are as ancient as herbalism itself, but little was known about how Samento worked in combination with other herbs.

What NutraMedix discovered was that Samento truly enhances the effects of other herbs. For example, its synergy with valerian provides relaxation and sleep support. When combined with stevia, it creates a formula to support a healthy metabolism, and with turmeric, a formula for promoting a healthy mood. All of these formulas greatly benefit from the basic immune system support provided by Samento. These combinations have undergone research and scientific studies to better understand the impact of Samento on the effectiveness of these herbs. The results so far have been impressive.

The synergy of Samento goes beyond the scientific realm. It has been a driving force for NutraMedix in its commitment to providing comprehensive support for people's health and well-being. Additionally, it has enabled the funding of valuable philanthropic projects across six continents.

"Cut into the vine," the natives told Tim, "It is a good source of water. You won't get sick." When he cut into it, the water flowed into Tim's mouth, looking clear and tasting woody and bitter, as if it were flowing through a bark filter.

And so, for the first time in his life, he tasted cat claw. What he didn't know was how this moment would change his life.

During those early years in the 1980s, Tim often ended up in the jungle doing God's work, drinking from Cat's Claw and sharing many teas with the Amazon natives, including teas made from Cat's Claw bark.

He spent many days and nights with the tribes, learning their customs and sharing their beliefs and stories. They taught him how to hunt, and in the evenings around the campfire, amid laughter and camaraderie, he learned more about cat's claw, that it was used for many things, and that it was an essential part of the Amazonian pharmacopoeia.

While in Peru, Tim met and fell in love with his future wife, Bertha. In the early 1990s, the newly married Eatons moved to Florida, bringing with them a vision for their new company, NutraMedix. They had clarity about how it would manifest: it would be God's company and they would be its stewards.

The goal was to offer healing products from Peru in the U.S. and use the profits to fund projects that would address the physical and spiritual needs of the Peruvian people. The first projects focused on rescuing street children and helping pastors and workers.
